The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has been recognized globally for its new banknote series, winning the Best New Series of Banknotes award at the High-Security Printing – Europe, Middle East, and Africa (HSP-EMEA) Conference. This award highlights Kenya’s commitment to advanced security features and world-class currency design.
CBK Introduces Enhanced Security Banknotes
The CBK launched its new banknote series in August 2024. It features cutting-edge security enhancements while maintaining the original designs of the previous series. The improved security features include Louisenthal’s RollingStar® i+ thread, making the notes more resistant to counterfeiting.
The higher denominations—KES 1,000, 500, and 200—now feature a ZigZag dynamic movement effect. The technology makes the security thread appear to move when tilted. The lower denominations—KES 100 and 50—use a Crystal effect, which enhances security while maintaining a sleek design.
Additionally, the new banknotes incorporate UV-sensitive iridescent bands for each denomination, providing enhanced visibility under ultraviolet light. A dual-color fluorescence feature further strengthens security by making the notes trickier to counterfeit.

CBK Recognized at Global Security Event
The award ceremony, which took place on February 4, 2025, in Basel, Switzerland, brought together global experts in currency security and document protection. The event focused on government-issued financial documents such as banknotes, ID cards, passports, and excise stamps.
Dr. Kamau Thugge, Governor of the CBK, emphasized that this recognition places Kenyan banknotes among the most secure and technologically advanced globally. He noted that incorporating state-of-the-art security features reassures Kenyan citizens and businesses of the safety and authenticity of their currency.
CBK’s Commitment to Currency Security
The CBK introduced this new series in August 2024, beginning with the KES 1,000 note, followed by the KES 500, 200, 100, and 50 banknotes. The banknotes have been circulating alongside the 2019 series, allowing a smooth transition.
This global award reinforces the CBK’s dedication to maintaining in its currency the highest standards of security and durability. As Kenya continues to modernize its financial systems, these advancements in banknote security ensure that the country remains at the forefront of monetary innovation.
By embracing cutting-edge technology, CBK enhances the security of its banknotes and strengthens trust in the nation’s financial system.
